Francis Ouimet wins the U.S. Open golf championship in Brookline.
September 20, 1913
The 20-year-old amateur and former caddy, who lives across the street, beats veteran English professionals Ted Ray and Harry Vardon in a three-way, 18-hole playoff at The Country Club. Regarded as the greatest upset in golf history, and one of the greatest in the history of sports, the Boston Globe subsequently declares, “His victory took golf away as the rightful property of the wealthy, the upper classes, and made it into a game that could be played by the clerk, the factory worker, or anybody who chose to buy a set of clubs.”
